Honda Charge Station EV, Burlingame CA, Fast Charging at home

Owens Electric & Solar recently completed a clean and code-compliant 50 amp dedicated circuit installation for a new Honda EV charger at a home in Burlingame.

Project Overview

This installation involved:

Installing a 50A, 240V dedicated branch circuit

Tapping from the existing 200 amp garage sub-panel

Installing a properly sized 2-pole breaker

Running appropriately sized conductors for continuous EV load

Securing and mounting the new Honda EV charging unit

Verifying voltage, torque specs, and proper operation

Why a Dedicated 50 Amp Circuit?

EV chargers are considered continuous loads under the National Electrical Code (NEC Article 625). A 50 amp circuit allows for:

Reliable Level 2 charging

Faster charge times

Reduced voltage drop

Proper thermal performance of conductors and terminations

Compliance with 125% continuous load calculation requirements

For a 50A breaker, this typically supports up to a 40A continuous charging load, depending on the charger’s rating.

Power Source: 200 Amp Garage Sub-Panel

Because the home already had a 200 amp sub-panel in the garage, we were able to efficiently tap power from that distribution point rather than running new feeders from the main service. Before installation, we:
